Learning Improvement Plan Update

Successes

The Oral Running Records Assessment is administered in the fall and in the spring.  Mrs. Knapp and Mrs. Ottaviano reassessed their students in February in order to determine if their work with their students was effective.  Congratulations to their Grade 1 and 2 students.  Overall, they have demonstrated great gains in their decoding skills and comprehension of passages.  They are readers!

The RAD Assessment of nonfiction reading material occurs in the fall and spring.  Our grade 3 – 8 teachers have recently reassessed their students to determine if their instructional practice around making connections, making inferences and extracting main idea and supporting detail has been effective.  Teachers report that the majority of students are making better connections to other texts, to themselves, and to the world.  As well, they are using text features to make more accurate inferences about what they are reading.  Whereas gains have been made in determining the main ideas, we have learned that we need to continue to focus on this as many are still inconsistent in their ability to do so.  As well, students are getting better at providing supporting detail; however, the support they give is often simplistic and incomplete.

Areas for Improvement

Our 2009 Grade 5 CAT 3 (National Assessment) in Math and the Grade 5 and Grade 8 Provincial Assessment for Learning in Math indicate that the students’ performance on the computation (+, -, x, and ÷) and estimation tasks require more focus.  We are currently devising a plan to address this area for improvement.  Once it is decided, we will revise our Learning Improvement Plan to include this as a numeracy goal area.  As well, we will make sure to include our plan in an upcoming newsletter.

On last year’s provincial Treaty Survey to which all grade 7 students in the province were required to respond our students fell short in knowledge of historical content related to Treaties.  To address this area in need of improvement Staff has been in serviced by the Office of the Treaty Commissioner, has explored the Treaty Education kits and curricula, and have set personal goals for incorporating this information into lessons across the curriculum.  This provincial survey of grade 7 students is going to be conducted again.  We are hopeful to improve in our understanding of the historical context of Treaties.

Students who are 10 – 12 years old will participate in a 9:00 – 3:00 p.m. track meet at Douglas Park Track.  Students who are 13+ years old will participate in a 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Douglas Park Meet.  The schools we will compete against are:  Henry Braun, MacKenzie, Grant Road, McVeety, and Hawrylak.  We will let you know more details in the near future.  Volunteers are always welcome!!!

News from your school division

On March 9th 2010, the Regina Board of Education voted to adopt the following motions based on the Renewing Regina Public Schools Plan.

1)       That, effective with the 2010-11 school year, Centennial School be designated a dual-track school and its French Immersion attendance area boundary established and that of École Elsie Mironuck School modified as deemed advisable; with pupils living in the newly–established Centennial French Immersion attendance area eligible for transportation (in accordance with established procedures) to École Centennial School commencing with the 2010-11 school year.

2)       That Ken Jenkins School be closed at the end of the 2009-2010 school year and that its attendance area be consolidated with that of École Elsie Mironuck School (English program); with all current regular Kindergarten to Grade 8 pupils (and their siblings) attending Ken Jenkins School to be eligible for transportation (in accordance with established procedures) to either École Elsie Mironuck or Ruth M. Buck School commencing with the 2010-2011 school year.

The school division will establish a new a French Education program at Centennial School for the 2010/11 school year. This school will be welcoming French Immersion students from École Elsie Mironuck who reside in the new French Immersion Attendance Area. This area is: north of the Ring Road and that area south of the ring road west of McCarthy Boulevard and north of Dewdney Avenue. More details are available in Consultant Craig Melvin’s report available at www.rbe.sk.ca.

Centennial School will continue to offer English language instruction. It will also meet the French immersion program needs of students in North/West Regina. Parents interested in French Immersion for their children should contact the Centennial School or any Regina Public French Immersion School.

Ken Jenkins School will be closed at the end of the 2009-10 school year and students from that school will be welcomed at their choice of École Elsie Mironuck School or Ruth M. Buck School.

Regina Public Schools administration has already met with staff in the involved schools. Division staff have also begun planning with the School Community Councils, staff, parents, students and others who work closely with the involved schools to develop a transition plan that creates a smooth transition for all students and staff.

For more details, please contact your school principal, or e-mail review@rbe.sk.ca

Writer in Residence Program

Welcome to Judith Silverthorne, our Writer in Residence from March 15 – April 19.  She will work for 3weeks with students in Discovery Pre School to Grade 8.   She will focus on the writing process.  Thank you to the School Community Council for engaging her services and for funding this program in support of our Learning Improvement Plan!

Progress Reports

  1.  Grade 4 – 8 Report Card

4 – To achieve a ‘4’, keep in mind that the student,”encourages and supports classmates” for the other students’ benefit.  This is part of what moves a student from a 3 to a 4 on the effort scale!

  1.  No Surprises

There should be no surprises on the progress report.  As teachers grade assignments, they often send them home with a rubric or a mark.  The final mark on the report card is the accumulation of these separate assignments since November.  Reading the agenda, talking about homework and asking to see assignments are ways to ensure that you will not be surprised by your child’s marks.

  1.  No Conferences

There are no conferences scheduled except for Kindergarten.  If you would like to meet with your child’s teacher, please call and schedule a meeting.  If teachers require meetings they will call you to discuss your child’s progress.

  1.  Reduced

If your child is working 2 years or more below grade level in Language Arts or Math, ‘reduced’ will be noted on the progress report.  This means that the teacher

has had to significantly modify the curricular objectives for your child in order for him/her to be successful.

  1.  Adaptations

Teachers regularly make adaptations for individual students or for whole classes.

Some common adaptations are breaking up assignments into smaller, more manageable chunks (chunking), using earphone/IPODs to reduces outside distractions, using the laptops, giving more time for a test, sending home

study notes/the test so that students may properly prepare for exams, having someone scribe for your child as he/she gives answers or altering seating to include chairs with wheels, balls, tables. . .

Basketball Season

Thanks to Ms. Wilkinson and Mr. Kukura for donating hours and hours for basketball this year.  Without their support of this extracurricular activity, we would not have had coaches.  The boys had some solid wins, and the girls won the City B League!

They will be dropped off by the playground on Garnet Street.  They are to enter the playground immediately as they arrive back to the school during the morning recess.  The supervisor will be on the playground as will the rest of the student body.  The band students are to keep their instruments with them, put the instruments on a picnic table, or ask the supervisor if they may put them in the bootroom.  Please encourage your child to follow this procedure.  We need students to be under the supervision of staff when they are at school.

Learning Improvement Plan

Writer in Residence Program

Judith Silverthorn will work with all of our students on the craft of writing during the period of March 15 – 19, March 22 – 26 and April 12 – 16.  Mrs. Stawarz, Mrs. Knapp, Ms. Straub and Mrs. Kukura are members of the planning committee.  More details will be shared in the near future.  We are thankful to the School Community Council for funding this opportunity for the students.  They are committed to helping make gains in literacy as mentioned in the school’s Learning Improvement Plan.

Math Literacy

Our fundraiser focus is learning math concepts and being able to demonstrate this knowledge.  Please keep practising with your children.  We look for forward to working with Stu Harris and Wilfred Burton, Members of Starla Nistor’s Instruction and School Services Team.  They will help us continue to focus on student achievement in computation and numerical estimation.

Parking in the Staff Parking Lot and In Front of the School

We have asked you not to park in these spots for reasons of safety for students.  We continue to ask you to abide by these requests.

At times, exceptions are made for individual families based on their need.  These alternate arrangements are made in consultation with classroom teachers and with the school principal.  Please know that extenuating circumstances must be taken into consideration when we make these alternate arrangements.  Currently, there is a family who has permission to drop off and pick up their child in the Cameron Street staff parking lot and in the front of the school.

Please continue to park and to drop off/pick up your children on the street in a safe location.  Thank you.

Literacy Support

Tumble Books Website

Here is something educational and fun you can do with your child at home. Google ‘Tumble Books’.      The user name is ‘rbe’ and the password is ‘books’.  I plan on doing this with my kids!

Author Reading

Mary Harelkin Bishop, the author of the Tunnels of Moose Jaw series, will be at Lakeview School on Wednesday, February 17 at 2:30 p.m.  We will be a site for a launch of her new non-fiction book Moving Forward: The Journey of Paralympian Colette Bourgonje. Thank you to Mrs. Hunter for organizing this opportunity!

Writer in Residence at Lakeview School

The School Community Council, in support of the Learning Improvement Plan, has engaged Judith Silverthorn, a published author, to work with Lakeview students for a 3 week period. The dates will be announced once confirmed. Madame Stawarz, Mrs. Knapp, Ms. Straub and Mrs. Kukura are members of the planning committee that will determine how she will work during this 3 week timeframe. This is an exciting opportunity for students to learn about the craft of writing from an expert.

I Wonder Conversations:  Inquiry Learning

We are working at increasing our students’ curiosity about their work and the world. We want them to realize that life if full of questions to be explored, new understanding, and more questions!!!  When you read with your child, spend time wondering out loud.

For example, if you are reading The Three Little Pigs, some questions that may come to mind are: I wonder why the pigs are moving away from their parents?, I wonder how they feel about being on their own?, I wonder what some other materials they could use to build their houses are?, I wonder what else the wolf could do to catch the pigs? or I wonder what the pig will do with all his wolf stew?

Many of the teachers have been using or will begin to create ‘I Wonder’ logs.  During the course of reading a novel, studying their Olympic theme or during their regular studies, students are encouraged to keep track of what they wonder. These wonderings/questions may become avenues of study for later projects!!!

Making Connections During Reading

Remember when you are reading to ask your child to make connections to SELF, to TEXT and to the WORLD. They know how to do this!!!  For example, if you are reading a book about riding a bike, they may make a CONNECTION to when they learned how to ride a bike (self), to the book Franklin Rides a Bike (Text) and/or to the Wise Riders presentations at school.  Ask them to explain.  Ask them what they think.  Have a great conversation!

Equitable Opportunities

Extracurricular Activities

Did you know that extracurricular involvement is voluntary on the part of teachers???  It is. The chart below outlines the range of extracurricular activities offered at Lakeview School right now.  Please take a moment to speak to your child about volunteerism, giving of themselves, and remembering to thank the staff/students leaders for their time and talent!!!

Fire Alarm on Monday

The sprinkler system in one room has been leaking.

It was being repaired.  Somehow this caused the fire alarm to go off.

As a result, we needed to evacuate the building

since we did not know at the time that it was a false alarm.

Some children were not wearing indoor shoes.

It is unfortunate, but they were forced to exit the building in socked feet.

When the alarm sounds we cannot let students stop

to put on shoes or to go to the bootroom to get their boots.

We are sorry for any discomfort or fear the children experienced.

This situation was beyond our control.

Learning Improvement Plan

A. Higher Literacy and Numeracy Achievement

Word Skills

When reading with your child, if he doesn’t understand a word have him practise these word skills.  Please talk about the strategies. This is critical.  The goal is to have these ‘metacognitive’ strategies (thinking about thinking) be second nature to students.  We want them to be thinkers, not just do’ers’.

Reread- Go back to a few words before and take a run at it.

Root Word- Look for a root word, or a smaller word within a big word (celebration).

Structural Analysis - Break it into manageable parts (Lake view).

Context Clues - Use pictures and diagrams to help you figure out the word.

Stop & Think -Think about letter sounds, spelling patterns and similar words.

Skip It- If you are still having difficulty figuring out the word, skip it and read on, then come back to it once you have read the passages.  Are there any clues to help you?

Passage Comprehension Strategies

When helping your child understand the content (what she is reading) practise these comprehension strategies.  Please talk about them!!!  These strategies, also, need to become second nature to students.  These are what good readers do naturally.

Reread - Go back and reread the sentence and if necessary the entire passage.

Read More Slowly - As soon as you hit a difficult word, you should slow down because there are likely to be more. It is not a race, and you are more likely to miss information if you are rushing.

Visualize -Make a picture in your mind while you read.

Ask Questions - Jot down some questions that pop into your head while you read.  Refer to them when you reread.

Make Connections - Use your background knowledge from books, TV, movies, etc to help you figure it out.

Hint:

A great way to help your child improve his/her reading fluency is by encouraging reading!!!  Read books, magazines, joke books, menus, cookbooks, comics, signs,

cereal boxes, guidebooks, websites, flyers, maps, phonebooks, fact books, lists. . .

B.  Smooth Transitions

Pre School Sessions

We are starting to prepare our Pre School Sessions for families that may be interested in sending their children to Lakeview School for Kindergarten in the fall of 2010.  If you know anyone with children who will be 5 years old as of December 2010 please promote Lakeview School.  They may contact me at lori.kukura@rbe.sk.ca in order to register for the upcoming sessions.

High School Transition

To start getting your head around your Grade 8 child’s next step, visit the following high school websites:

You will learn about programs that are offered at each high school.  You will see what additional supports are available.  You will start to get an idea of how to prepare your child for the transition from elementary to high school.
