A Blanket is More Than a Blanket

1 week 2 days ago
A Blanket is More Than a Blanket

MARCH 16, 2023 -- A blanket is defined as “a large piece of woolen or similar material used as a bed covering or other covering for warmth” (Oxford University Press). However, the simple commodity known as a blanket has different significances depending on the cultural or ethnic background.

Indigenous cultures across North America made and used blankets in different ways depending on their ecological surroundings. Some blankets were made of various plant fibres found in their environments, while others were made of animal skins from hunting, and some were made of a combination of both plant and animals. Indigenous blankets also had their own evolution of development as settlers and traders moved westward and the country was expanded for the Canadian Government.

How to Make Others Happy

How to Make Others Happy

MARCH 3, 2023 -- During February, Albert Community School Eagles were so kind to everyone! Kindergarten students were tasked with a project focusing on how to make others happy.

After talking with both a.m. and p.m. classes, students decided to make something altogether as a group. As a result, they requested that everyone at Albert draw and trace their hands and write messages of kindness on them.

Once the Kindergarten students received all of the hands from the whole school, they made a beautiful heart display to symbolize unity, kindness and positivity.

At Albert Community School, their hands might be small, but they have big hearts!

Campbell QSA Activities

JANUARY 5, 2023 -- Campbell Collegiate’s Queer-Straight Alliance (QSA) has had a very busy first half of the school year! In August, this amazing group of students came together to paint a rainbow crosswalk and rainbow sidewalk in front of Campbell Collegiate. The goal of this was to create a sense of belonging for people not only in the school but also in their greater community.

The next thing the QSA turned their attention to was a Halloween party to which they invited students from Sheldon-Williams Collegiate’s GSA to join them for karaoke, dancing and, of course, pizza! This was an incredibly well attended event with over 50 students showing up in amazing costumes. There was so much laughter and many great memories made as well as some amazing musical numbers.

Together We Can Student Group

DECEMBER 23, 2022 -- The Grade 12 Leadership Pathway team, led by Quinn Anderson at Scott Collegiate, and the mamawi kakaskihtânânaw - Together we can student group, led by Cynthia Penner at The Crescents School, recently gathered to learn and share with each other.

The Pathway team created activities to engage the mamawi kakaskihtânânaw group. Students introduced themselves, sometimes using their first languages such as Saulteaux and Cree. As part of the introduction, some students also chose to identify which nation they came from, which inspired other students to find out which nation they came from. The energy was fantastic, and the Scott-Crescents student collaboration is going to continue throughout the year because the students asked for it!
